Artistic Ways to Liven Up a Plain Old Fence

Artistic Ways to Liven Up a Plain Old Fence

We don’t often think about fences as especially decorative structures. However, a drab, boring backyard fence doesn’t need much to transform it into a gorgeous focal point. Simply adding a pop of color or a creative hanging display can make all the difference.

You’ve heard of white picket fences, but what about bright green or hot pink picket fences? Go for just one color, or paint each section a different color for a fun display. Try using different shades of the same color for a monochromatic look, use hues of the same color family (think pastels or jewel tones), or go for a full-on rainbow for a bright, bold look.

For an artistic look, why not paint a mural on your fence? If you’re skilled with freehand painting, grab a brush and get started. If you are more artistically challenged, you can still make a gorgeous mural using store-bought stencils. Just pick out a few designs you like, arrange them the way you want, and dab on the paint. No technical art skills needed! Add a clear coat of sealer to protect your artwork from the elements.

We gardeners tend to jump at the chance to grow plants anywhere and everywhere, so why not add the fence to that list? Plastic pails, flower pots, baskets, and other containers can be filled with flowering plants and suspended from a fence to give it an instant refresh.

A boring fence can be transformed into something magical with a meandering vine growing on it. Be careful not to choose vines that are invasive like English ivy. It looks very pretty, but will take over and could even destroy your fence. Any other vines are great for metal or vinyl fences, but if you have a wooden fence, choose annual herbaceous vines. Perennial or woody vines may cause damage to the structure of a wooden fence. Good choices for wooden fences are Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata), sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus), and climbing nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus).

Attaching a birdhouse (or several) to a fence makes a cheery decoration, plus your backyard birds will thank you. Simply attach picture hangers to your fence and hanging hardware to the back of a wooden birdhouse, and voilà! Hang a few different birdhouses of different sizes in a cluster for an eye-catching display.
