Anytime we can get kids outside is a good thing, right? We think so! Whether they’re gardening, playing games or exploring the backyard, we want kids to put down the electronics and spend more time in the great outdoors. One way to do this is by encouraging kids to take arts and crafts outside! And this is where chalkboard paint can be a lot of fun.

Stephanie recently had a great project on making chalkboard flower pots. To add to that, we wanted to give you a few more ideas for using chalkboard paint outside with kids. Remember that the rain could wash the chalk off, but don’t worry. You can decorate your items again and again! Here are 5 ideas!

  1. Make chalkboard stepping stones. You can use the bottom (saucer) of flower pots for this. Just paint, sink it into the ground and write a message. (The sinking in the ground part is important so the saucer doesn’t break if you do step on it.)

  2. Turn part of a shed into a chalkboard. This works best on the inside of wooden shed. Choose a wall to create a big chalkboard. Then you can keep track of gardening tasks or plant progress right there.
  3. Create chalkboard markers. Find large sticks and paint them with chalkboard paint. They might not be the best plant marker because rain might wash them off, but they’re a lot of fun for writing messages.
  4. Make a chalkboard stump. Take a stump and paint either all or part of it in chalkboard paint. You can have a lot of fun by decorating it with different colors of chalk or turning it into a throne!
  5. Create a chalkboard birdhouse. Take a birdhouse you already have or pick one up at the garden center and paint it. You can write fun messages to welcome the birds!
