Container Gardening – Using Outdoor Decor Items Year-Round

Container gardening is a year round activity with an opportunity to use your outdoor decor items all twelve months of the year. Instead of investing a lot of money in new arrangements and containers for the winter season, why not use what you already have and just give things a new look for the holidays?

You might remember this iron hanger that was filled with snowdrops in March (see how I did this here). During the summer months, it was tumbling down with sweet potatoe vine. In the autumn, a white pumpkin sat on top of the burlap.

And now it’s filled with evergreen cuttings, some dried hydrangea and a gold ball for some glam. After Christmas, I’ll remove the gold and add some more cedar to take it through the winter months. By leaving the hanger in it’s home, all I have to do is refill it with each season. Nothing is permanent, so it’s easy to switch things up.

The same thing applies to this metal planter which is also filled with a Christmas theme. It usually sits under the bay window and is filled with seasonal plantings as you can see below.

And finally, last week I showed you our nature filled urns by the front door which I recently bought after searching everywhere this month for them – in our small town these were hard to find and even the closest Home Depot shuts down their garden centre during the winter months because it’s considered a “mini store”.

Well, I’m already thinking ahead to next spring and tucked some tulip bulbs into a shallow dish to overwinter in the garage. Next March, I’ll switch out the greenery for these and add some tall curly willow branches for some height. The tulips will grow through the branches to carry this look through to mid May when it will be time to add some summer blooms.

This time of year, the garden centres and even grocery stores are filled with pre-made decorations for the holidays. They can be so costly and frankly they all look the same. Why not use what you’ve got and create something individual to your house this winter?
