Hair Braiding

I never had the patience to learn French braiding as a teenager but of course I can braid my hair into a simple back or side braid or pigtails.

Problem being now I'm an adult and I'm very interested now, not so much in French braids which seem passe, but in Germanic or other fancy braids like this:

Does anyone have any tips for making more complex braids easier? Is the key making sure the hair is somewhat damp so therefore more controllable?
