Forcing bulbs for indoor bloom is not difficult and is lots of fun. As the garden year ends outside for many of us, we can now turn our efforts indoors. Hyacinths, tulips and daffodiles are often forced but probably the easiest of all bulbs to force are paper-whites. You don’t even need soil for this to work, just water! Follow the steps below and you will be enjoying fragrant paper-whites before Christmas.
HOW TO FORCE BULBS ( PAPER-WHITES )
Choose any container you wish as long as it is at least 2 inches deep. I enjoy using clear glass as this allows you to see and watch the root growth.
Fill your container part way with polished rocks or ornamental pebbles. I also added clear glass balls to get some heigth.
Set your bulbs on top of the pebbles. Make sure your bulbs have the pointed end up.
Add more pebbles to cover the bottom third of the bulbs.
Add water, only enough to touch the bottom of the bulbs. If you add more than that you risk your bulbs rotting. You will have to monitor the level of the water on a daily basis and add as needed. You will loose some to evaporation.
Set your container in a sunny spot and enjoy the show.
